In today's myth, we are focusing on the Second Sun from the Mexica, more commonly known as the Aztecs, starring rival brothers Quetzalcoatl (ket-suhl-kuh-waa-tl) and Tezcatlipoca (tez-kuht-luh-pow-kuh).
In case you didn’t read our post about the First Sun (GO READ IT!), let’s do a quick recap of what has happened in the First Sun. The First Sun, Tezacatlipoca, and his brother Quetzalcoatl do not get along, not just in your ordinary “all siblings fight” way, but in a “I will knock you out of the sky” way. And so Quetzalcoatl does just that, embarrassing his dear brother, to which Tezacatlipoca retaliates and wipes out all of the inhabitants of this world.
So, let's resume, shall we? Into the story of Second Sun we go.
Tezcatlipoca, an angry and envious person, is now governing the Earth after overtaking his brother, Quetzalcoatl.
Quetzalcoatl represents creation, the wind, learning, arts, and crafts. In almost complete opposition to his brother, Quetzalcoatl is known as the White Tezacatlipoca of the West.
And yeah, I think I’d be a little annoyed too if my brother was dubbed the better version of me.
In this era, humans were created (that's us)! They survived on an extremely bland but expensive diet of piñones, also known as pine nuts.
Unfortunately, Tezcatlipoca was not the best ruler; he had become corrupt and sinful, possibly pairing all that with his anger and lust for revenge against Quetzalcoatl. So, as anyone would, he turned all the humans into monkeys. Some believe that the monkeys symbolize a reverse civilization to a more primitive or less civilized state.
With monkeys now populating the world, as any hero would do, Quetzalcoatl sends a massive, powerful wave of wind and hurricanes to sweep away the human-turned-monkeys. And, with that, the Second Sun has come to an end.
Thank you beautiful people for sticking around and listening to me blab about this tale. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for our take on the Third sun coming up!
